A motor vehicle accident closed 56th Avenue on Friday afternoon for several hours between 58 Crescent through 276th Street.

A witness on scene said the crash involved a Chevrolet panel panel van, a Volkswagen Golf and a five-ton delivery truck. The accident occurred shortly before 1 p.m., according to RCMP Cpl. Holly Largy.

A van was travelling eastbound on 56th Avenue when it appears to have rear-ended the VW at 275th Street, causing it to spin into an unoccupied truck, she explained.

The driver of the van was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries and the driver of the Golf, a 42-year-old from Surrey, was transported by ground ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries, Largy said.

The landing site was set up at a nearby hotel. The driver of the van, a 50-year-old from Surrey, may have been impaired, Largy added.

Langley RCMP, assisted by the Lower Mainland Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS), are investigating the crash.

The police would like to hear from anyone with information on the incident, including witnesses, who have not yet spoken to them. Call the Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200.
