Williams Lake residents gathered noon Monday for a Kinder Morgan pipeline protest hoping to send a political message to Prime Minister Trudeau.
“We are here to let Trudeau know that we are not impressed with his decision to buy out the Kinder Morgan pipeline,” said organizer Jodie Capling, who recently moved back to her hometown. “There are going to be political consequences.”
Protest participant Rodger Hamilton said he is very opposed to the purchase of a 65-year-old pipeline.
“It is a bad decision,” Hamilton said. “It’s a bad deal for Canada and a bad deal for the climate change commitments in Paris and a bad deal all around.”
Several members of the Council of Canadians Williams Lake Chapter attended the rally, including Keith Munroe who said the message of the federal government is inconsistent.
“You can’t demonstrate climate leadership and invest in increases in tar sands production, it just doesn’t make sense,” he said.
In April, city council voted unanimously to send a letter of support for the pipeline expansion.
