The Village of Midway council held its regularly scheduled meeting on Oct. 17, discussing the community hall renovation project and the new branding for the Village of Midway.
The Village of Midway recently received a grant for over $11,000 from the B.C. Rural Dividends Fund. According to a news release, the funding is to crate a brand identity for the village that can be used in marketing and tourism.
Jenny Simmonds, the village secretary, presented a report to council on the process for creating a brand identity for the village. The village will be working with Munday Media and Designs. According to Simmonds, the design consultant has recommended that the village form a “branding committee” containing staff, council and community members.
Simmonds noted that she and acting mayor Richard Dunsdon will be filling the staff and council seats, and they have brainstormed for other community members who might be a “good fit” for the position. Following that, the committee will come up with a plan and the design consultant will host a town hall meeting to engage all residents.
Foreman’s Report
Midway foreman John Boltz noted in his report to council that the airport hangars are close to filling up for the winter, and that a new plow and sander have been ordered for the truck coming into the winter months.
Boltz also highlighted new stop signs from Emcon Services, which were put up to increase the visibility and reduce risk. The stop signs are larger in size and elevated, because store parking often blocked the signs in the past.
Boltz also said the high efficiency heating unit discussed at the last meeting for the ambulance has been purchased and installed.
Administrator’s Report
Chief Administrative Officer Penny Feist advised council on the fire referendum meeting that took place in Rock Creek last week, noting a generally positive reception in the room for the tax.
Feist also highlighted the village’s upcoming grant application process for funds to renovate the Midway Community Hall. Daniel Steiner, a grant specialist, has been authorized to complete the application. Total funding requested is $93,840 out of a total project cost of $117,300.
According to her report, the municipal funding will come from the Community Hall Reserve Fund.
