The Vimy Ridge candlelight vigil and parade will take place on Thursday, April 9 at the Abbotsford Cenotaph, Thunderbird Square on Veterans Way.
Veterans and Royal Canadian Legion members are asked to participate. The public is invited and is asked to be in place by 7 p.m.
The parade step off is at 7:15 p.m. and the ceremony begins at 7:30 p.m. The annual parade involves veterans, soldiers, Royal Canadian Legion members, cadets, police, firefighters, sheriff branch members and others.
Candles will be placed in memory of those who served at Vimy Ridge, remembering those who died defending the freedom and democracy enjoyed by all today.
Vimy Ridge Day, on April 9, was established by the government in Canada in 2003 to commemorate the battle of Vimy Ridge, which started on April 9, 1917 in France. The Canadian Corps successfully battled the Germans to gain control of the strategically valuable ground – the first time the four Canadian divisions fought together as a united Canadian corps under mostly Canadian commanders.
