Volunteers still needed

More than 1,4000 signed up to help the Greater Vernon B.C. Winter Games from Feb. 23-26

The province will soon be converging on Greater Vernon, and residents can still get involved.

There are currently 1,425 people registered to volunteer for the Feb. 23 to 26 B.C. Winter Games, while 2,000 are needed.

“We still have lots of time,” said Akbal Mund, Greater Vernon Games president.

“We’re not overly concerned. There has been amazing support from the community. To have 1,425 so far is a huge number.”

Among the key areas requiring volunteers are food services, transportation and accommodation dorm hosts.

Mund expects the number of volunteers will continue to increase, but he is urging those who think they are helping out to confirm their participation.

“There are a lot of volunteers who thought they have registered but aren’t in our data base,” he said.

“They should check with the office because to be part of the Games, you have to be registered.”

Anybody wishing to volunteer can go to 2012bcwintergames.ca or call 250-550-2012.

“It’s a great way to show support for the community,” said Mund.

The 2012 B.C. Winter Games will bring a total of 1,400 athletes and 500 coaches and officials to Vernon, Coldstream, Silver Star and Armstrong.
