Walk of Nations celebrates 10th anniversary

A legacy of the North American Indigenous Games in 2008, the 10th annual Walk of Nations takes place this year on Sept. 22.

The walk offers the opportunity for First Nations and non-First Nations to join together in a new way.

“It has been 10 years since the North American Indigenous Games saw our community come together in new and profound ways on the path to reconciliation, the journey of our generation,” said Sandra Thomson of Social Planning Cowichan, who along with the Cowichan Intercultural Society are hosting the event. “The walk celebrates the rich diversity of the Cowichan Region as we stand up for our shared values of love, understanding, forgiveness, and togetherness.”

The group will meet at the old Vancouver Island University parking lot on Cowichan Way and walk to the One World Festival on St. Julian Street. There they’ll celebrate with food, cultural performances, and music.

All are welcome to join in the fun. Bring signs and banners or dress in your traditional clothing and arrive by 10 a.m.

The walk begins at 10:30 a.m.
