Walmart buys former Target stores at Delta’s Scottsdale Centre, Surrey’s Central City

SURREY — Walmart is picking up where Target left off.

Walmart Canada announced Friday morning that it is buying 13 of the former Target Canada stores throughout Canada, including the locations at Delta’s Scottsdale Centre and Surrey’s Central City. Two other stores in B.C. have been bought – at Coquitlam Centre and Haney Place Mall in Maple Ridge. The other locations are in Winnipeg, Ontario and Quebec.

The $350-million plan is subject to court approval, as part of Target’s exit from the Canadian market.

The announcement comes weeks after Central City lost two major tenants just day apart. Future Shop closed on March 28, with Target closing on April 1.

"Both the Best Buy/Future Shop and Target announcements present exciting redevelopment opportunities for Central City," Bill Rempel, vice-president and manager of Blackwood Partners, which owns the mall, told the Now at the time. "We are examining a number a various scenarios as part of the long-term positioning of our asset."

Calls to Bentall Kennedy, which owns and manages Scottsdale Centre, were not returned as of Friday morning.

Walmart expects renovations to start in a few months.
