WATCH: Chilliwack mayor and council sworn into office at Cultural Centre

Inauguration ceremony Tuesday had the right amount of pomp and circumstance

There was just the right amount of ceremonial pomp and circumstance Tuesday night at the Seventh Council Inauguration.

Recently elected Mayor Ken Popove and council held their inaugural council meeting at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre to make formal declarations and swear oaths of office before Justice Thomas J. Crabtree.

The final report of the Chief Election Officer was presented, along with the list of council committee/board appointments and the mayor’s address.

Mayor Popove started off his inaugural mayor’s address with recognition that the event was being held on unceded territory of the Sto:lo people.

In terms of advisory committees, Mayor Popove retained leadership of the Housing First committee, as well as co-chairing the Chilliwack Healthier Community table, and the Fraser Valley Aboriginal Relations Committee.

Public safety and the Creative Commission will be chaired by Coun. Jason Lum, while the advisory committee looking at affordable housing and development, will be chaired by newly elected Coun. Harv Westeringh.

Coun. Kloot will chair the agriculture and rural advisory committee again, and the design review advisory committee.

Coun. Sue Attrill will be at the helm of the BIA advisory committee, and the public art committee, heritage, and the FVRL.

Coun. Jeff Shields was named chair of the transportation advisory committee, while Coun. Bud Mercer will lead the parks and trails committee.

Invocation and blessing were delivered by Minister Angus Haggarty, singing by Avianna, Madalyn and Jack Clempson, and piping by Kendal Clarke. Performances during the reception were by Chilliwack Community Band and the Chillwack Symphony Orchestra Trio.
