Kimberley Transfer Station re-opens on limited basis
The Kimberley Transfer Station is now open on a limited basis, after the main building was extensively damaged in a fire on Friday July 13.
The Regional District is re-opening the recycling and re-use areas, and has a smaller area for the disposal of household garbage. They ask that residents only bring small household loads, as capacity is limited. Any larger commercial loads, mattresses and box springs, will have to be taken to the Cranbrook Transfer Station until further notice.
Wildfire on St. Mary Lake Road
On Wednesday a small wildfire broke out just outside of Kimberley City limits. The fire, which was .3 hectares in size, was close to the Mathew Creek Road turnoff along St. Mary Lake Road.
Ashley Davidoff, with the Southeast Fire Centre, says an initial attack crew of three firefighters got the blaze under control.
Crews also responded to a fire near Burnett Creek, discovered Tuesday, that reached roughly a hectare in size, but is now out. Both fires are suspected to be human-caused.
Given the current hot and dry conditions, Davidoff says a campfire ban could be a possibility sometime in the coming weeks.
Viking Village coming to Kimberley
The Kimberley City Bakery will no longer be hosting the Kimberley Medieval Festival. A group from Alberta will now be taking over the festival, and they also hope to establish a year-round, historically accurate viking village in the Kimberley/Cranbrook area.
Jen Silverhorse and Sandy Poxon have been part of the medieval circuit in western Canada for many years, and have been the driving force behind the Alberta Medieval Settlement. They have already started working with organizations such as the Columbia Basin Trust and Tourism BC to put their plans in action.
