Enjoying the water at Cedar Lake has become more accessible thanks to the installation of a new dock.
The installation of a new swimming and fishing dock at the Cedar Lake Recreation Site was completed on October 25 as part of a partnership between the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD), Rec Sites and Trails BC, the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, and the Golden District Rod and Gun Club.
During the construction, the day-use area was temporarily closed to allow for the safe operation of machinery in the area while work was completed.
The dock at Cedar Lake is designed to remain in the water year round, and will not be removed in the winter. Part of the dock, the dynamic gangway, will be unbolted for the winter and placed on top of the dock, to be reinstalled in the spring, explained CSRD communications manager Tracy Hughes.
“The dock will be marked with fluorescent flags so the outline of the dock will be visible through the snow in the winter” she stated.
Designed to accommodate swimming and fishing, the “T” portion of the dock is set at a depth that promotes safe swimming and effective fishing. The design concept was built in consultation with the Area A Parks Advisory Committee, Rec Sites and Trails BC, CSRD staff, Bourcet Engineering, and the funding partners.
“The dock was identified as a needed amenity following requests from the public who sited public safety issues with broken glass and sharp objects in the silt area in front of the day-use area,” Hughes said.
Subject to budget approval, the CSRD plans to make improvements to the day-use area in 2020 including picnic table pads, erosion mitigation and ditching, accessibility improvements and placing additional sand on the beach area.
In September, the Golden District Rod and Gun Club also installed a new dock at Susan Lake, a popular fishing and hiking area. This installation was a partnership between the Rod and Gun Club and Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC.
