Utility installation is underway on the Condensory Bridge to provide water and sewer services to the K’ómoks First Nation community.
The work is being conducted under permit from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI). The prime contractor is Leighton Contracting of Courtenay.
“The walkway on the upstream side of the bridge will be closed with this utility installation,” MoTI said in a statement. “The downstream side of the bridge will be open for pedestrian crossings and the City of Courtenay has installed a new crosswalk to accommodate pedestrians crossing Anderton Avenue on the east side of the bridge.”
Pedestrian fencing on the upstream side will be installed to maintain pedestrian connectivity on the bridge.
The ministry expects the work to be complete by early December. Until then, bridge traffic is single lane alternating.
In 2016, the KFN and the City signed a servicing agreement for the provision of water and sanitary sewer services to the IR No.2 property on Condensory Road, including the site of the Puntledge RV Campground. The agreement allows the KFN to expand the campground, and to consider other economic development opportunities, a 2016 news release stated. The KFN has also expressed interest in building a residential housing complex on the property.
