Residents are increasingly turning to the Internet for information and the Regional District of North Okanagan is taking action to facilitate that relationship.
The board has asked administration to bring back a report on whether updates are required to the regional district website.
“There are concerns from the public about getting information out to the public,” said director Patrick Nicol of navigating www.rdno.ca.
“We need to seriously look at an overhaul to the site.”
Nicol wants assurances that updates to the website will be considered as part of the 2012 budget process.
“It’s one of the best things we can do in terms of communications to the public. It seems like we could improve it,” he said.
Wildfire Funds Sought
The potential for wildfire to threaten North Okanagan communities is on the radar.
The Regional District of North Okanagan will apply for provincial funds for wildfire prevention initiatives in the Cherryville community forest, at Silver Star Mountain and in Keddleston Park in the BX.
“These are big issues around our communities,” said director Patrick Nicol of the fire threat in the interface.
If the funding is received, the project will determine the hazards in the three areas and then take the appropriate measures to minimize the wildfire risk.
“The project will look at cleaning up around the (Silver Star) village itself,” said Ron Baker, protective services manager.
Biodiversity Strategy Proceeds
Efforts are underway to determine the level of biodiversity in the North Okanagan and what steps are required to ensure its viability.
The Regional District of North Okanagan has agreed to provide $10,000 this year to the Okanagan Conservative Collaborative Program for its biodiversity conservation strategy.
“We will give them $10,000 so they can begin the process and it’s something we’ll need for our regional growth strategy,” said director Wayne Lippert.
As part of the biodiversity conservation strategy, RDNO may consider providing an additional $10,000 in 2012.
