The Abbotsford Police Department suffered more heartbreak this week, when the 19-year-old son of Deputy Chief Mike Serr died in a car crash in Maple Ridge.
The crash took place at about 2:30 a.m. Monday in the 21200 block of Lougheed Highway, resulting in the death of Aiden Serr. He was the lone occupant in a vehicle that was found flipped on its side.
Serr was studying biology at Simon Fraser University after graduating from Maple Ridge secondary in 2016.
He played minor hockey, as well as box and field lacrosse and ball hockey for local clubs and a school team. He was a captain on various teams.
The crash call came in as a structure fire. However, when members of the Maple Ridge fire department arrived, they discovered a single vehicle lying driver’s side down, with a fire in the engine compartment, in front of a 7-Eleven convenience store.
The vehicle had been travelling eastbound along the highway at the time of the accident.
Fire crews had to extricate the driver through the sunroof of the car to a waiting ambulance.
Lougheed Highway was shut down for at least one hour as the water supply line had to cross the road to put out the fire. The cause of the crash remains unknown.
Duty chief Doug Armour, with the Maple Ridge fire department, said all three emergency groups worked well together to quickly get the patient out of the vehicle and transported to hospital.
He was reportedly in serious condition, but friends of the family later confirmed that he died.
