A West Kelowna grass fire threatened, but didn’t damage, two historical buildings Wednesday.
West Kelowna Fire Rescue responded to a report of a grass fire below the Gellatly Heritage Park around noon Wednesday.
The first engine made an initial attempt to protect two historical buildings and a home in the park. Efforts were successful and no damage to any of the buildings was reported.
A total of 17 firefighters responded to the blaze as RCMP and BC Ambulance assisted at the scene.
According to assistant fire chief Darren Lee, the two-hectare fire was accidentally caused by sparks from the cutting of metal.
Regional District parks staff recently cut back grass and weeds growing near the historical buildings—that defensible space helped protect the heritage site, said Lee.
