The Westside community is invited to the grand opening of the Kids Care Spray Park in Westbank Centre Park, at 2569 May Street, on Saturday, May 26 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Starting at noon, the District of West Kelowna will offer free hot dogs and refreshments while supplies last.
Around the spray park, municipal staff will set up games and activities for children of all ages—everyone is encouraged to come out for the free family event.
The event is being held to mark the first full season of the children’s water playground, which was completed last summer.
The spray park opened for a couple of weeks in September, 2011, but the district opted to wait to host an opening celebration so it could kick off the first full season with a big splash in the spring.
The Kids Care Spray Park was a dream of the Rotary Club of Westbank. The organization first approached local government in 2007, seeking support for construction of an accessible children’s water playground in Westbank Centre Park.
Over the following four years, Rotarians worked tirelessly to raise $216,197 toward spray park construction.
Funding included a $60,000 donation from Okanagan Kids Care, as title sponsor, and $20,000 from the Westbank First Nation. The West Kelowna Daybreak Rotary Club also provided $40,000 in in-kind professional project management, engineering services and labour.
The District of West Kelowna contributed $79,555 toward the project, plus staff support. In 2009, the municipality also constructed a washroom and utility building for users of the spray park and the surrounding Westbank Centre Park.
