The City of White Rock will dole out $40,000 worth of funding to local organizations for 2016, after council voted to approve grants-in-aid recommendations this month.
The city received 44 grant applications and 15 of those requests did not receive funding, as recommended by the grants-in-aid sub-committee at a meeting March 15.
The biggest boost will go to White Rock Museum and Archives, which was approved for a total of $7,000 based on two applications submitted under general allocations and arts.
Peninsula Productions Society – which also applied twice – will be given a total of $4,000.
Grants of $2,000 were approved for the Surrey Youth Theatre Company, Semiahmoo Peninsula Marine Rescue Society, White Rock Fire Fighters Charity Association, White Rock Events Society and Alexandra Neighbourhood House.
Approved for grants of $1,500 were Semiahmoo House Society, Christmas on the Peninsula Society, Outside the Box, Peninsula Arts Foundation and Seniors Come Share Society.
Funding of $1,000 each will go to Semiahmoo Family Place Association, the Crescent Beach Pipe Band, White Rock Irish Club, RCACC 2812 Seaforth Highlanders, Green Teams of Canada and Semiahmoo Arts.
The White Rock Polar Bear Swim and the White Rock Social Justice Film Society will each get $750; White Rock Community Orchestral Society, Critter Care Wildlife Society and Canadian Red Cross will be given $500; and grants of $250 each will go to Semiahmoo Secondary and Earl Marriott dry grad committees.
Applications that were not approved for funding include Harmony Expressive Arts, Let’s Dance Events, READ Surrey White Rock Society, White Rock Elks #431, Chinese Village Club, International Community Celebrations Society of BC, Ocean Athletics Track & Field, Peace Arch Hospital and Community Health Foundation, Surrey Search and Rescue, White Rock Sea Tours, Saskia Sanchez and Mostafa Sabeti.
White Rock council voted unanimously March 21 to approve the recommended grant funding, with Mayor Wayne Baldwin and Coun. Helen Fathers absent. Couns. Lynne Sinclair and David Chesney removed themselves from chambers due to a conflict of interest for the votes relating to the Seniors Come Share Society and the White Rock Social Justice Film Society, respectively.
