Wildflower School to keep its beehive

City council voted to give the school a bylaw exemption

Wildflower School can keep its hive, provided its bees behave.

Nelson city council voted Monday to extend the school’s exception to the Animal Regulation and Control Bylaw and let the school keep an observation hive built last year in its Kindergarten-Grade 1 classroom.

The bylaw currently restricts apiaries within city limits. But, according to the staff recommendation that council passed, Wildflower’s hive will be allowed to remain in place until the bylaw is amended on the condition that no complaints are received about it. The staff report indicated there have been none to date.

Council voted unanimously in favour of the hive.

The observation hive was provided by the Bee Awareness Society.
