BC Hydro crews were scrambling to get to 33 areas affected by power outages due to a wind storm that swept through the Bulkley Valley with wind gusts of up to 90 km/h Monday.
About 1,000 were without power from Quick to Evelyn, and trees caused driving hazards as the fell across roads. A trampoline on Rosenthal Road was tossed around like paper on a vent. A tree knocked onto a power line on Rosenthal closed the road in the afternoon as crews worked to fix the damage.
The most populated areas affected are by Lake Kathlyn and Seymour Lake, and near Rosenthal Road.
Highway 37 was closed in both directions 150 kilometres north of Highway 16 because of a tree on the road. Drive BC was warning of strong cross winds on all highways between Burns Lake and Terrace.
Environment Canada has issued a wind warning as an intense Pacific low pressure system is moving across northern B.C. today, producing the southerly winds of 60 km/h gusting to 90. The winds are expected to ease late this afternoon as the low moves eastward. Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur.
