SURREY — Police say a 57-year-old woman suffered life-threatening injuries after a truck hit her while walking in Surrey Thursday night.
It happened near 72nd Avenue and 138th Street around 6:45 p.m.
A Black Press Media freelancer at the scene said the woman was struck by an eastbound Dodge pickup truck while in a marked crosswalk, but that it was “unclear if the pedestrian was crossing against a red light or not.”
Surrey RCMP declined to comment on whether they believe the woman was in a crosswalk when she was struck.
The victim was rushed to hospital in critical condition, Surrey RCMP say, but police would not comment on the type of injuries she sustained.
“Alcohol and speed are not believed to be contributing factors in this collision,” Surrey RCMP Corporal Elenore Sturko. “The incident is still under investigation.”
The driver stayed at the scene and is co-operating with police.
The crash led to traffic closures in the area, with 72nd Avenue closed eastbound from King George Boulevard to 140th Street while police investigated.
