A woman was struck by a train but found alive on the CN Rail line just south of Atwood St in Terrace this week.
A resident walking his dog in the area said at around 8:30 a.m. on October 27 the animal alerted him to the conscious but uncommunicative woman lying near the tracks with extreme injuries to her foot.
Paramedics rushed the woman to hospital for treatment but at this time her condition is not known. RCMP are continuing their investigation under the conduct of CN Police. A CN spokesperson said they will be discussing the issue with city leadership.
“Any incident like this is a tragic reminder of the dangers of trespassing on railway property or equipment. We continue to encourage pedestrians to stay away from the rail yard and never take a short cut that can cut short a life.”
This is the fourth incident since Sept. 2016 of a train striking a pedestrian in Terrace. In all three other cases the victims died. Community leaders are pushing CN to make more effort in blocking access to its property more effectively. Talks are also underway for federal and provincial funding for a pedestrian overpass.
Responding to the accident Terrace Mayor Carol Leclerc told the Terrace Standard that prior to today’s incident she and Skeena MLA Ellis Ross had already been organizing a tour of the rail yard with a high-ranking CN executive to discuss solutions to the problem.
“I am very saddened to hear there’s been another incident on our local tracks,” Leclerc said. She declined to discuss publicly what she and Ross hope to resolve in the meeting with CN until that conversation is established.
