Removal of a breakwater has forced the closure of a Lake Country park.
Okanagan Centre Safe Harbour Regional Park will be completely closed for the demolition and removal of the south breakwater structure and piles.
“This work requires us to completely close the regional park located on Okanagan Centre Road West to all boats, vehicles and pedestrians,” said Bruce Smith, with the Regional District of Central Okanagan.
“The closure will be in effect until Sept. 30 as Burton Marine and Pile Driving crews will be removing the entire south breakwater infrastructure, which is significantly deteriorating. We’ve received the necessary approvals from the Ministry of Environment to do this in-water work ahead of the expected return of shore spawning kokanee.”
Signs advising of the park closure will be posted on both gates.
“We’ll also post a sign that can be seen from the water so that boaters won’t enter the harbour while the park is closed,” said Smith. “Local sports, marine and recreation groups will also be advised of the closure.”
The regional district doesn’t anticipate any further in-water work at Okanagan Centre Safe Harbour Regional Park until the next fish work window which begins in June next year.
“Plans call for installation of a new viewing/recreational pier to replace the south breakwater and a courtesy dock for boaters utilizing the main boat launch in the park,” said Smith.
