Hi, I’m the Tribune’s newest addition. I’ll be working here over the next little while as a work experience student. I’m 19 and am a in Grade 12 at Columneetza secondary.
My dream (at least currently) is to become a journalist.
I’ve been accepted into three universities, including Carleton’s School of Journalism in Ottawa.
I am hoping to head there next year, to do a four-year bachelor of journalism program.
Journalism has always interested me because it’s not the usual nine-to-five job.
Sure, it may involve a large amount of research and sitting in front of a computer typing out stories; but journalism also includes leaving the office and meeting people, finding out about things, reporting on events, and telling people about what you find out.
That’s the part I like.
My biggest goal is to become a foreign correspondent, bringing international stories home to Canada. My international perspective comes from the fact that I spent last year as an exchange student in the south of Belgium, learning another culture and language.
When I tell my parents I want to work in Africa, reporting about the wars and cultures there, they always look rather worried.
Perhaps working at the Williams Lake Tribune is a long way away from Africa, but I have to start somewhere.
As a friend recently told me, “You learn best by doing.” I’m excited and pleased to be doing just that, working alongside the best at the Williams Lake Tribune.
