Motorists had to put up with some inconvenience in August as work crews block alternating lanes of the Golden Ears Bridge.
But if those motorists were nearby residents from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, they shouldn’t have minded.
The work crews replaced the sound absorbing material on the bridge deck’s expansion joints, to minimize the noise from tires passing over the joints.
TransLink spokesman Jill Drews said the work was to take place from Aug. 21 to Aug. 31.
“It’s something we measure and we maintain those expansion joints as needed. Whenever they notice that it’s getting noisy, they do it,” Drews said.
The noise from the joints has been an ongoing concerns for residents who live near the bridge, almost since it opened in 2009.
The process involves inserting geotextile material into the expansion joint, followed by neoprene strips that seal the material inside the joint.
This August, nine joints had the material replaced, cosing about $100,000.
“Filler material for sound absorption is replaced on an as-needed basis. Material was replaced at some joints last summer,” Drews said.
