If Sicamous receives a Main Street bridge the municipality won’t be financially responsible for its upkeep.
This was one piece of new information available at a Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) open house on the Bruhn Bridge replacement options held on Feb. 1 at the Sicamous and District Recreation Centre.
It took an exhibition game for Eagle River Secondary’s fledgling Talons junior boys basketball team to see they have what it takes to succeed.
On Jan. 31, the Talons hosted the A.L. Fortune junior Falcons basketball team from Enderby. The teams appeared to be evenly matched and the Eagles would end up turning in a respectable 38-23 win.
A Sicamous family had a fright following a residential fire at the Mara Lakeview Mobile Home Park on Feb. 7. Fire chief Brett Ogino said the fire occurred around 8:15 a.m. A mom and two kids living in the trailer were able to get out okay, while the father was already at work. Ogino said several shovels of snow had been thrown in to contain the fire before firefighters arrived.
“We arrived to heavy smoke in the front living room – moderate fire showing…” said Ogino. “Crews arrived very quickly and completed the knock down and extensive overhaul.”
Ogino said there was severe fire and smoke damage but, “luckily the family escaped and the trailer is still fully intact.”
Team Time to Bail will be gearing up for another 55-storey climb for charity. On April 29, Sicamous firefighters Dan Roddick and Jessy Horsfield will be in Calgary to take part in the Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge. The challenge involves ascending 1,204 stairs in the Bow Building, as fast as they can while dressed in full firefighting turnout gear. At team Time to Bail, this will be Roddick and Horsfield’s second go at the event; they completed it last year in approximately 28 minutes. They want to shave it down to 20.

The District of Sicamous will be looking for someone proficient with audio/visual equipment to hire now that funding for the position has been approved by the Columbia Shuswap Regional District.
At their Feb. 15 meeting, CSRD board directors approved three separate requests from the District of Sicamous for money from the Electoral Area E Rural Sicamous /Malakwa’s economic opportunity fund.
One of the requests was for $60,000 for the development and construction of new highway signs. Another request was for $55,000 for a digital reader board for outside the district civic centre.
A third request – the only one that didn’t receive unanimous board approval – was for $50,000 a year over three years for an events position. The board’s deliberation concluded with a vote in favour of the funding request, with only Electoral Area D director Rene Talbot opposed.
Residents rally for four-lane and Main Street option. Brenda Dalzell, Sicamous resident and business owner, is rallying other like-minded individuals who want a Main Street bridge to speak up and be heard by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

“I think people who don’t want something, they’re always the loudest voices,” said Dalzell. “And I thought, you know what, so many people I’ve talked to are all in favour of it…it’s important that we make a stand…”
Effective March 5, a new Columbia Shuswap Regional District bylaw implements a building inspection service in Electoral Area E.
Most new construction as well as renovations, additions and demolitions of existing structures will require the owners to submit building permit applications to the CSRD.
The Eagle Valley Community Support Society (EVCSS) is holding a charity auction to help continue its work responding quickly to help community members in crisis.
The society’s goal is to raise $8,000. The auction is online and features items donated by local businesses.
Janet McClean Senft, the society’s executive director, said the donations from the community have been very generous.
The auction began on Feb. 14 and wraps up on March 16; a total of $3,745 in bids have already been pledged.
Nine-year-old Levi Dewitt visited interesting agricultural sites in the Fraser Valley with the 4H club and told the Eagle Valley News about it. They attended a dairy expo farm tour and trade show.
Sicamous native Shea Weber, a defenceman for the Montreal Canadians, will not return to the ice for the remainder of the NHL season.
The club announced on Feb. 22 that Weber will undergo surgery to repair a tendon in his left foot that will force him to miss the remainder of the season.
