The Golden Landfill officially opened its hazardous waste disposal site on September 29.

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) announced the opening of the year-round residential disposal option for hazardous waste at the Golden Landfill two weeks ago. Residents are now able to drop off oil, oil containers, oil filters, antifreeze, antifreeze containers, and household hazardous waste free of charge, year-round on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“The really good news is that it’s free of charge,” said CSRD communications coordinator Tracy Hughes.

Previously, the CSRD arranged annual pickup across from 7-Eleven during different times in the year. Residents were expected to collect their hazardous waste and dispose of it during these allotted times.

CSRD Area A director Karen Cathcart hopes the year-round facility will encourage people to dispose of their waste properly, and she hopes it will limit the amount of illegal dumping in rural forested locations.

Also included in the list of household hazardous waste that is accepted at the landfill moving forward is mercury, pesticides, solvents, tar, grease, adhesives, pool chemicals, paint, and flammable, corrosive, reactive, and toxic items.
