Yellowhead Community Services (YCS) is on the lookout for people willing to become Home Share providers and help others with diverse abilities in the Clearwater and Barriere areas.
Providers in the Home Share program, which is contracted to YCS through Community Living B.C., offer support to clients by helping build life skills, preparing meals, accessing community resources and other supportive activities.
“With the Home Share program, it’s a situation where adults with diverse abilities share a home with a Home Share provider to provide support to the adult with diverse abilities, and their personal needs,” said Alysha Piva, manager for the program.
“For example, the provider could provide a furnished room in the home and they can assist with self-care, building relationships, and personal care. The Home Share provider is supporting the individual in their home in either a room or a suite, or another small building on their property, depending on the individual.”
Providers also help with fostering positive relationships with friends and family as well as make sure the client is getting the right medical and dental care.
The basic requirements for the position include relevant training or previous experience working with people who have diverse abilities, First Aid and CPR certificates, a valid B.C. driver’s license and a criminal record check.
Home Share providers also need to be willing to get a physician’s letter of good health, three reference letters, a satisfactory home study, a Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) certificate, a signed declaration of confidentiality, and a signed release of information.
Being a Home Share provider is a paid position and those interested can check out communitylivingBC.com where there’s a breakdown of compensation a provider would get.
“The individual and the approved provider would have to meet and get to know one another,” Piva said. “Typically when a person wants to become a Home Share provider they have to attain or complete certain things. Then there’s a process including a home study, an interview and references and then once the person is approved they’d eventually be matched with an individual depending on their preferences, lifestyle and what type of individual they’re willing to support.”
