July 20, 1944 – November 3, 2023
It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Dorothy Bird (nee Matthews) on November 3rd, 2023, in Salmon Arm, BC with her loving family at her bedside after a long battle with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), a rare neurodegenerative disease. Dorothy chose to die with dignity through MAID.
Dorothy was born in Liverpool, England on July 20th, 1944, to parents Joseph Matthews and Elsie Matthews (nee Evans). She immigrated to Toronto, Canada in April 1964 and worked as an executive secretary at Brithaupt Milson and Benson advertising agency. This is where she met Fred Bird of Belleville, Ontario. Fred and Dorothy were married on July 10th, 1965.
Dorothy leaves behind her loving husband of 58 years, Fred Bird, daughters Kristen Bird (Matt Henry) and Cathryn Bird (Tony Polse), and four granddaughters Ona Goodman, Elena Goodman, Emily Henry, and Jocelyn Henry. She also leaves behind her brother John Mathews (Jacky) and niece Alison, in Liverpool, England.
Dorothy will be missed dearly and will always be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who was deeply passionate with everything she did, showed unconditional love and generosity to all those around her, and shared her warmth in the most generous way – all with fantastic spunk and a sense of humour. She was one hell-of-a lady!
Big fat hugs (BFH) Dorothy/Mom/Nana. The colour purple will forever be yours. We love you very much and we will ‘see you soon’!
