Lydia Labun

June 11, 1935 – November 20, 2023
In loving memory ~

Lydia Labun went to be with her Lord on Monday, November 20, 2023, peacefully in her sleep.
She is predeceased by her parents Jacob and Helen Loewen; her first husband, Dr. Clarence Labun (died 1972); and her second husband, the Rev. Sam Cooke (died 1996). She is survived by her children Andrew (Carolyn) and Doris and six grandchildren. Lydia was born in Coaldale, Alberta and baptized in the Coaldale Mennonite Brethren Church. She graduated from the University of Manitoba, married Clarence, and after Andrew’s birth they spent three years as medical missionaries in Paraguay. Doris was born shortly after their return to Canada. Lydia resumed her teaching career after Clarence died and in 1975 moved to Abbotsford, British Columbia to live near her aging mother. Lydia first taught Home Economics and Art at the Mennonite Educational Institute, then taught in the public school system, retiring in 2000. She enjoyed two happy years with Sam Cooke before his death. Lydia always put her family first. She was a tremendous support to both of her children and maintained connections with her many siblings and cousins across Canada and abroad. When Alzheimer’s began to affect Lydia, she moved to Kelowna, British Columbia to be near her son. Lydia was a teacher, artist, world traveller, and a generous host.
Many thanks to the staff at Village at Mill Creek for their loving care.
Lydia’s funeral will be in Abbotsford on Wednesday, December 20, 2023. For funeral details, condolences, and photos, visit her obituary page at www.springfieldfuneralhome.comObituary-
