Agriculture changes a cause for concern

A lot has been written recently regarding farming in the District of North Saanich but I wonder if residents are aware of just how far these studies, reports and suggestions have proceeded. Chickens in Dean Park and other residential areas.

Edible food requirements for all new developments, homes, town houses and commercial development; or provide property tax reductions to attract an abattoir or slaughter house including changes to bylaws, and possible purchase of Sandown raceway by the municipality.

Already the mayor and council have committed more than $30,000 to this project and a further $25,000 has been requested, along with other grants and funds for agriculture. Farming and food is a very important part of any community but we also have other concerns.

I urge all residents of the area to check out the various reports, especially the Agriculture Strategy February 2011 which was put before council. Make sure this is what you wish your local government to stand for.

Balance makes for good communities and good governments.

Conny McBride,

North Saanich
