Friday’s 40th Anniversary show by the local Skating Club was quite the impressive feat, with many of the skaters displaying true talents in the sport of figure skating (see Page 16).
Not to rain on the parade, but it was a shame that the only boys participating were quite young, with all the older skaters being girls. It’s too bad that antiquated ideas around masculinity prevent boys from doing things seen as feminine.
It’s refreshing, however, to see that fitting into one’s gender stereotype doesn’t apply as strongly to girls, as evidenced by the number of girls taking part in local minor hockey.
There’s still a long way to go before things are 50/50, and kids are comfortable in doing what they want, without fear of being teased.
• In the opinion column a couple weeks ago, I defended the business background of the Town of Lake Cowichan’s elected officials by citing councillor Frank Hornbrooks’ history of managing of the Lake Cowichan Seniors’ Centre. Like those who criticize council’s lack of a business background, I, too, wasn’t fully informed. Councillors Bob Day and Jayne Ingram also have business backgrounds.
