In the interests of conserving energy (and my pension cheque), I have conscientiously followed the tips for less gas usage.
I turned down my thermostat, wore extra clothing, washed clothes with cold water and timed my showers, to name a few.
I was delighted to see on my current bill the commodity charge was less. This feeling of good conservationist soon faded as I perused my bill.
Imagine my dismay to find the delivery charges more than my usage.
The breakdown is as follows: delivery charges — 45.5 per cent, commodity charges — 40 per cent, taxes, etc. — 14 per cent.
I also note that the “basic charge,” 23.7 per cent, apparently covers no gas use at all, and I can only assume is pure profit.
It is appalling that governments and gas companies find it necessary for such profit on a basic survival need for Canadians.
