Dear Sir:
Events at the public accounts committee hearing in Ottawa on September 28 should give all Canadians pause regardless of their political views.
The committee ordered its meeting room cleared, and behind closed doors voted to shelve the federal Auditor General’s reports from the last session.
This is our money which they have taken unprecedented steps to hide from us how it has been spent.
They have actually taken the Auditor General’s work, said thank you very much for it, and locked it away in a procedural safe where it is protected from even access to information requests.
And by doing this in-camera, they have even made it illegal for the MPs who were present to talk, forever that is, about what was done or why.
No surprise though really.
This is Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s idea of democracy.
It’s going to be a long four years.
I just hope we have some democracy left when it’s over.
