Help them be all they can be

Well, I am very disappointed.  I asked the editor of this fine newspaper to give me an extension on my deadline for this column because I wanted to get in the latest news after the General Meeting which was scheduled for Tuesday Sept. 6 at the Legion Hall at 7 p.m.  Now, we have more than 700 members in this wonderful branch and, guess what? We did not have enough for a quorum.  Do you believe that?  We only need  20 people, including the executive – of which there were eight in attendance – but nope, we could not scrape up another 12 members interested enough to take time out of their busy schedules to attend a meeting which usually lasts no longer than one hour.  Yes, I am a bit dismayed.  We can not hope to run an efficient branch without the help of our dear membership.  We need your help.

OK, I have had my tantrum and said what I think needed to be said and now it is up to you.  The next general meeting is scheduled as always for the first Tuesday of the month, so that’s Oct. 4  – so don’t make me come down there.  Isn’t that what your mom would have said if you had not done what you know you were suppose to do?  That was my attempt at humour.

Now, on to business.  There is a zone meeting for all branches coming up Oct. 1 – 2.  This will be held in Forest Grove which is about a 20-minute drive from 100 Mile House.  This is open to all Legion members.  Some of your executives0 will be attending this meeting at their own expense, and will report back on what occurred at the latest convention and on any policy changes being introduced by the BC Yukon Command.  If you would like more information about attending, and everyone is welcome, just contact the local office for details.

With summer on the way out, although you would never guess that with this beautiful beginning to September, you might be wondering where to store your RV.  I may just have the solution for you.  The Legion Beach will be available for RV storage.  Just contact the office and Wanda will provide you with the contract.  The RVs will be stored at your own risk.  The Legion will not be responsible for any damage or vandalism, so you will need to make sure that your insurance coverage is up-to-date.  But, it is a very reasonable storage fee, so you will want to check out the details before the snow flies.

Keenager exercise classes began this week at the Legion Hall.  Time to get back into shape after a lazy summer.  These classes run every Tuesday and Thursday 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. at the cost of $3.  Maybe get some of your friends together and head on down there for a class and then drop into the lounge afterward for a cup of coffee.  Do you know that coffee is still only $1 a cup at the Legion?  That has to be the lowest price in town.

If you were waiting to hear about the Zumba classes, you are in luck.  They are starting back up on Wednesday.  These are a fun filled exercise class that combines your physical workout with dance moves.  It is a wonderful way to get in that workout without feeling like you are really working hard – even though the results will amaze you.  These classes are 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. and are also $3.  This is such a good deal.  Hurry in.  You will not be disappointed.

Taco Gypsy has extended their stay in the Legion parking lot until the end of October.  If you have not had a chance to taste their Mexican delights, you need not worry.  You still have two more months to enjoy their fare.

Your Legion executive is planning their annual Ladies Auxiliary dinner.  Every year the executive puts together a dinner for all the LA members as a thank you for all the hard work and dedication they show every year.  Where would our branch be without these wonderful ladies?  I shudder to think about it.  This dinner is scheduled for Sept. 25.  We just went over the menu and I know that no one will walk away disappointed with this effort.

Karaoke begins this Wednesday and Friday.  There is an admission of $5 at the door which entitles you to sing to your heart’s content.  The $5 admission goes directly to your friendly Karaoke lady who is, after all, doing this as her business.  So come on in and show her your support.

Dance lessons are also beginning this Wednesday.  Who wouldn’t love to be able to get out on the dance floor and be confident that no matter what song is playing you can effortlessly move around the floor with flair and ease.   So if it has always been a hidden desire of yours, now is the chance to learn to feel confident in your dancing ability.  It is always a good thing to challenge yourself and step out of your comfort zone.  Go ahead – you know you want to.

If you have not bought your tickets for French Night, which is scheduled for Sept. 17 with a complete French Canadian meal followed by a dance with the New Country Touch, you had better hurry.  We have already sold half of the tickets.  Remember only 60 dinners will be sold.  I hear rumours that a certain “Peter” is rehearsing some Jean Guy French jokes – don’t want to miss that.  If you can’t make the dinner, and so sad for you if you cannot, you can buy tickets to attend the dance only. Remember – First Purchased, First Served.

Ticket are on sale for Ladies Nite scheduled for Sept. 24 with our Bijoux representative bringing in all her wares from Vancouver which include jewelry, purses and shoes.  Also, we will have a display from Heather Hartridge’s exercise studio H3F and her wonderful health line USANA.  If you have never heard of these products you are in for a real treat.  Also on display will be Epicure, so you can stock up on all your Christmas needs – taste a sample or two from Bonnie and you will definitely being buying some of these products to help ease preparation for those Christmas feasts.  And, of course, we have Alternative Solutions Skin Design which is a brand new business opening their doors in mid-September.  This business specializes is ‘cosmetic tatoo’.  You will not want to miss out on this latest rage.  So, ladies if you have not already purchased your tickets you will want to stop in, without delay at the Legion.  It’s  $5 to get in to this wine and cheese party that you will not want to miss out on.

So, until next week, remember to drive with a little more caution as school is back in and sometimes the excitement of these first days can make those little ones a bit reckless.

Enjoy the sunshine, and thank you Mother Nature for this last bit of summer.  Be kind to each other.
