Editor:
A few weeks ago I witnessed a young lady get struck by a vehicle while crossing the highway at a marked crosswalk on her way to school (driver was at fault).
Although she was later released from the hospital and not seriously injured, the incident had the potential to be much worse. Since the majority of our crosswalks are not controlled by lights, it is our responsibility as drivers to be extra diligent when approaching these areas, especially at the ones that have poor visibility.
That being said, it’s also the responsibility of the pedestrian to ensure that the vehicles are going to stop before crossing, don’t assume you’re safe just because you’re at a crosswalk.
So with the warmer weather coming and the increase of pedestrian traffic, next time you’re going through town take note of all the crosswalk locations, there are a lot more than you realize.
Sincerely,
Jason Blackwell
