BOUQUET To the man who pulls his dog in a wagon full of blankets and pillow. Your kindness and love for your dog is amazing. You are an amazing person for the care you provide your dog.

BEEF I called the cable company, was told there was a 25-minute wait and requested a call back. Hung up and immediately got a call from them, then waited 29 minutes on hold.

BOUQUET To Darryl at Lowe’s for very kindly coming over to us to offer our pup a treat. Sadly two seconds after you walked up to us, a very rude and unstable man stormed past screaming that he was looking all over the store for someone to help him, etc. You did not deserve to be treated like that. Staff working there were all very helpful, friendly and hard-working and we absolutely love coming there because of you.

BEEF To the irresponsible parent in the store who thought it was OK for their 12-year-old to play in the produce products and when confronted said, ‘oh come on, he’s only 12.’ Be responsible, teach your child. People like you spread the virus.

BOUQUET To Aleesha at Chartwell Malasapina for her always cheerful smiling face greeting us for our family visits with the residents. She is always so kind and helpful during these sometimes stressful times.

BEEF To Island Health for making it impossible to get tested for COVID in Nanaimo.Open sites for daily appointments and walk-ups.

BOUQUET To B.C. Ferries for medical assured loading.

BEEF To the local stores where masks are mandatory to wear (as they should be everywhere) but do not enforce this policy. We all want to stay safe so please everyone, wear your masks.

BOUQUET To Central Drugs across from NRGH for excellent service. Belinda checked online for a product, then said it would be in the very next day, then called to say it was. Just a $4 item but I’d been looking for over a year. Two other places said they didn’t have it and couldn’t be bothered. Great customer service, thank you.

BEEF To those in Departure Bay using their wood fireplace to heat their home when the air quality is at a 10-plus meaning it is dangerous for anyone to breathe. Have some consideration for others, not only when the air quality is poor. Wood fireplaces should be a thing of the past.

BOUQUET To Walter in the dairy area of Real Canadian Superstore. A most courteous and helpful young man, great with customers. Superstore, you have a real gem there.

BEEF To the restaurant downtown that gave me some infection with their meals.

BOUQUET To Nick at Craftsman Collision for his outstanding customer service. I went there looking for a part to fix my Dodge Caravan. He dropped everything and installed the part within minutes and the best part was there was no charge. He was friendly, helpful and efficient plus he gave me a referral to another business for another issue I had as well. He is a real asset to his company. Thank you.

BEEF To the government. Force the large retail grocery chains to start to take back empty tins and bottles. The liquor store now does.

BOUQUET To Leroy D. at Nanaimo Toyota whose fabulous team provides the most dedicated, efficient and friendly service I’ve ever encountered at any dealership. Leroy treats his staff and customers like family so you can count on your vehicle always getting the very best of care and servicing. Wow!

BEEF To the person who said the casino should move to the old Sears building; you must be new to town, it is in the old Sears building. What you mean is it should move to the new old Sears building. Just saying! And I agree.

BOUQUET To the fellow who found the abandoned tree saplings and took the time to plant them down a trail – even coming back regularly to water them. Thank you for caring.

BEEF Great that customers can pick up furniture orders at a Nanaimo collection point for a flat rate. But here’s the beef: returns must be taken to a store. No exceptions, and no return timing window despite risk of travel during a pandemic. Would cost me more than the $40 item value to travel to the Vancouver store. No more orders for me.

BOUQUET Thank you to the eagle-eyed, kind-hearted person who spotted and turned in my lost little hearing aid near London Drugs. It must have escaped when I fiddled with my mask.

BEEF To the deck and railing company. I called and asked him for a quote work on my sundeck. He said I would have to take a picture and send him by e-mail. I told him I am a senior and do not know how to do pictures on the computer. He then asked me if I could turn on my washing machine. It was insulting, rude and demeaning. They have lost my business and my respect.

BOUQUET I would like to thank C.J. at Broco Glass for his outstanding customer service when I took my daughter’s Honda Civic there for an estimate to repair a window seal. He was friendly, courteous and professional. He fixed her car immediately while I waited. He is a real asset to his company. Thanks.

BEEF To the beefer name-calling people not wearing masks. You have no idea what their situation is, so character assassination is wildly misplaced. There are many reasons that one might be unable to wear a face covering, mandate or not, so don’t judge so harshly what you don’t know.

BOUQUET To Ryan at the News Bulletin and the delivery person who have made sure I receive my paper every week. Really appreciated.

BEEF To the woman at the north-end grocery store handling all the broccoli – no mask, no gloves – then shouted obscenities to me when I called her out on it. Be COVID-conscious.

BOUQUET To my two sons. I might not see you but I love you and you are both in my heart always.

BEEF Only ticketing people who put garbage cans out the night before seems unfair. Why not ticket all the homeowners who leave their garbage cans outside 24/7? Wildlife doesn’t care where the can is as long as it’s available.

BOUQUET To Erica, an RN on the sixth floor, for solving my glucometer problem. You are so brilliant. From a grateful senior colleague.

BEEF To the hair salon. There is no wiping down of chairs, gowns, or stations between clients, no wiping down of the debit machines after use, and no hand-washing between clients. I have been coming to your salon for years and after what I saw, or didn’t see I won’t be returning.

BOUQUET To the office staff at NDSS. They have put in tireless hours and e-mails to support kids and staff. I hope they know how much school families appreciate their hard work. Please everyone be kind to school staff, administrators, and teachers. They are going through what many workplaces went through at the start of COVID. Running a semi-regular program with new guidelines and safety is stressful. Everyone is doing the best they can.

BEEF To the general public who believe any government had the best interests of it citizens at heart. So many countless examples to the contrary.

BOUQUET Thank you to the blue/purple haired lady at 7-11 who saw me tell the cashier I’d forgotten my debit card at home. I was so embarrassed and started putting all my items back. Then she stepped in and quietly asked the cashier not to cancel my sale as she would get it for me. I asked if I can pay her back; she just smiled, said, “No worries bud, just pay it forward,” and left.

BEEF As winter approaches, everyone should check all the lights on their cars and trucks. We have counted hundreds of cars and trucks with burned-out lights, front and back.

BOUQUET When I was walking home from work, I saw a guy digging in the dumpsters. A woman came out of the building in her pyjamas, asked if he’s hungry, then gave him a bunch of food. It looked like they had a pleasant little chat before she wished him well and headed back in. It warmed my heart to see some nice selfless deeds, especially during this awful pandemic.

BEEF Ride hailing, ride sharing – it doesn’t matter what you call it, it is still a taxi service and should be regulated as such.

BOUQUET You had a moment of absent-mindedness and that’s OK – it could have happened to anyone.

BEEF No, Dover Road is not a raceway, though it sometimes appears that way. Cars, trucks, motorcycles, noisy transportation of all kinds. Thanks to all the responsible drivers who take care. School is back, kids are on the roads, people are dog walking. Please keep our roads safe for all.

BOUQUET To the Nanaimo RCMP. Our police are out in the city every day trying to make a difference, uphold the law, and do a great job. They work long hours and just showing up for work put their life in danger. I would like to thank one officer in particular as I had a lack of judgment while driving and ran through a red light. To my surprise I was let off with a warning and it really made my day.

BEEF For not making masks mandatory. Yet another in a too-long list of political foul-ups.

BOUQUET To Lois at Central Drugs at Beban Plaza. I’m from out of town and forgot to renew a prescription before I left home. She very happily filled it for me and made sure it was delivered a few hours later. Great customer service. Thank you.

BEEF To the lady who plays the same song by Collective Soul loudly every morning. My brother and me are trying to sleep.

BOUQUET To all the nurses at the palliative care unit at NRGH. They are super angels. Their caring and compassion extend to the loved ones visiting at all times day and night. Their singular goal is to make comfortable the patients in their care and they succeed beyond anything I can describe. Bless them and the work they do. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

BEEF To the Canadian media for negatively covering our police department in what seems like 90 per cent of the articles written.

BOUQUET To the employee of Soccer City who was so kind and helpful to my little nephew. Thank you.

BEEF To the two women who snickered and one said to the other “people and their stupid masks” as they walked past me entering the mall. You should know better than to bully. My spouse is immunocompromised and needs to be protected. Congratulations for making another woman feel small.

BOUQUET To a lady at PetSmart who was a customer like us. She showed up earlier than us to purchase a guinea pig, but was so nice to let my son choose first. There were only three available, and my son was waiting for this day for two months. Thank you very much for your kindness.

BEEF To the teachers for not having a plan for COVID; they had months to figure it out. RCMP, firefighters, grocery stores, mail service and many more did not stop. Why did the teachers union not have a plan before school started?

BOUQUET To my former neighbours of Maple Street, Bobby, Gary, Ian, Erin, Dave, Dylan and Anna. Thank you for all of the help over the years and the great memories. It has been a pleasure to be a part of the neighbourhood for the past 48 years and I was lucky to have the best neighbours.

BEEF To the government B.C. Cannabis Stores open or opening in Nanaimo. During a time of a pandemic and the poor financial status of our government, now is not a good time to be spending taxpayer dollars on money-losing government cannabis stores. There are enough private retailers in Nanaimo.

BOUQUET To the amazing gentleman and his neighbours who leapt into action when I stupidly got the front end of my car stuck in a ditch on Metral Drive. Thank you all so very much for getting me back on the road.

BEEF To politicians and judges for not giving the men and woman in blue the necessary means to clean up streets. They are quite familiar with these repeat criminals and do arrest them but let them walk out on the streets in less than 24 hours is really hurting the middle class and must affect the mindset of our police officers. I can’t imagine their frustration.
