Bylaw enforcement

Resident questions the priorities of city bylaw enforcement

Good on Guy Mosseau for going to city hall to do some research on our bylaw enforcement officers.

However, I must question his math when he states that bylaw salaries are in the ball park of $250,000. If as Guy states there are five full-timers at $33.75 an hour and three part-timers at $28.34 an hour, plus a clerk and a manager, we’re looking at close to $750,000, including benefits.

Now, here’s the real issue. What are we getting for our money?

We have lived in Alexis Park for 12 years. I walk around our area almost every day. There are derelict cars, backyards full of garbage and junk and, in one case, old appliances in the front yard. I know a very elderly woman who could not sell her home and move to a seniors’ residence because the yard next door overflowed with junk.

I know there are bylaws to deal with this so why are they not being enforced?

I know that it’s easier to slap a $10 ticket on Guy’s expired meter than it is to face down a junk hoarder, but I think we deserve for more our $750,000.
