It doesn’t have to be football season for me to play armchair quarterback. It’s great fun really. Because it can never happen, I can’t lose. I practise on all kinds of things, even politics. Here is one play I would call tomorrow if I were in charge.
Although we are told the economy is in good shape right now, I don’t believe them. If the government is still cutting back services and they can’t afford to properly fund the hospital, why would I, why would anyone?
My play to put things right would start by removing all sales tax on all real estate transactions, all building materials and anything that is associated with the construction industry and new building starts.
My reasoning is clearly obvious. The bulk of the economy relies on the construction trade and the housing market, so get that moving and …touchdown.
Before some official flags me offside, saying the government cannot afford to lose all of that amount of sales tax money, I’ll remind them the materials will still be on the shelf and the housing market will be zero if it stays as is.
With the skilled trades back to work, the tax shortfall would soon be recovered.
Money would be found to open the two floors at VJH. And, oh, by the way, if your trade requires you to wear a hard hat, don’t bother dusting if off just yet. Remember this is just like the economy, wishful thinking.
