Canada’s prime minister a ‘true blessing’

To the Editor:

I’m writing to express my concern at the three-pronged attack mounted by Lorne Eckersley, Ann Day and Kuya Minogue against our federal government, Stephen Harper, in particular.

In his column (“What has our politics come to?”), Mr. Eckersley keeps lobbing missiles at our prime minister, implying that he and his party are not to be trusted. In her column (“Robocall not Canadian government’s only scandal”), Ann Day accuses our government leaders of “muzzling” scientists. And Kuya Minogue, in her letter to the editor (“Inquiry into robocall scandal is needed”), invites readers to lobby the governor general to dissolve our federal government if it so much as minimizes the robocall investigation.

As this is a free country, I would also like to voice my opinion. I am so glad we have Stephen Harper as our prime minister. He has been a true blessing to this country.

Just a few of the praiseworthy events of his leadership:

First, his apology on behalf of all Canadians to the First Nations people for the wrong-headedness of Canadian government policy in the past and the hurts this brought to the families of so many in our country;

Second, his unswerving support for all Canadians in our military, past, present and future, who have served our country so honourably. This is not mere flag-waving, but a commitment of our government to support those who devote their lives and make so many sacrifices for us all;

Third, his continuing efforts at improving Canada’s international trade relations. He is, as we speak, in Japan, working at establishing stronger trade ties;

Fourth, his unstinting support for Israel, leading a UN walkout against the tirades of those misguided leaders who insist that the Holocaust was fiction; and

Fifth, his public honouring of Preston Manning, who, in my opinion, is one of the greatest Canadians never to become prime minister.

These are just a few of the noteworthy accomplishments of our prime minister. I know there are many more, and I would like to encourage you to think on these things and on all things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely and admirable — anything, in fact, that is excellent or praiseworthy, because these are things worth thanking God for!
