Judy Brownoff has stated that the Capital Regional District needs to voice our regional concerns about the transportation of oil.
I don’t believe that the CRD has any power to control the ships that are travelling within the channel. I believe the provincial and federal governments make and enforce these regulations.
If anyone wants to know the effects of an oil spill, all they have to do is go onto the Internet. There should not be any surprises. All municipalities along the West Coast should be concerned about the potential for “disasters” that may occur within their area. Everyone should be prepared for it, but we know many are not.
What will the CRD do if there is an oil spill? I believe that the Canadian Coast Guard is responsible to co-ordinate all of the clean-up procedures. There is a lot of literature out there and I don’t believe we should be spending taxpayer’s money to re-invent the wheel.
If the CRD feels it needs to spend this money, I believe it should be spent on something over which they have control.
