Dear editor,
I found the cartoon in the recent Wednesday paper quite ironic. The good city mayors are up on their back legs howling at the misguided opinion of Westworld’s depiction of their fair burgs as “…a tangle of big box stores…”
The irony comes when one looks at the stories sharing page space with this supposedly imprudent statement. In one local paper, the complaint was bordered by the notice of Costco opening and a picture of salivating consumers with their overbloated shopping wagons. The next article screaming across the front page of your paper extols the construction of Trilogy’s clone of strip malls, box stores, restaurants, and “…maybe a casino…” (Just what we need to attract unavoidable social detritus).
Look at the photo on Wednesday’s Record — the highway back-dropped by the boring old Beaufort Range snow-capped peaks and a tedious clean green forest. How dreary. It will be sooo much better with a concrete duplicate of the outskirts of Mississauga, Surrey or Newark.
So, worthy mayors, salve your wounded pride and puff out your chests a bit more. Visitors to our Valley will feel at home knowing they can undergo retail therapy when the swimming, hiking, biking, golfing, kayaking and cultural events become too onerous.
Proudly yours,
Harold Macy,
Merville
