Editor: The following letter is in response to the letter “Town resident finds reasons….” of the October 5 Gazette.
Many cats are roaming neighbourhoods in Lake Cowichan. Some of these cats have homes and some are strays. And some are feral or partly wild. Many people are upset over these cats visiting their yards uninvited. We hear about it all the time.
The stray cats we can help to find new homes.
The feral cats we can humanely trap and immunize, spay or neuter and then return to their territory. The remaining wanderers , unfortunately, we cannot help because they already have homes but if their families kept them indoors where they are safe from disease, parasites, cars, mean animals and those upset neighbours then they likely would not need our help.
Mr. Foolkes it is regrettable that we could not solve all your cat and neighbour problems. Our volunteer did track down Meeko and returned her to you before your letter appeared and did you follow up on that lead to find Bailey?
Editor’s note: Foolkes contacted the Gazette shortly after the October 5 issue was sent to the presses with an update on Meeko, which was by then too late to be included in his letter to the editor.
Here is what the Lake Cowichan Animal Rescue Society is all about: We are a volunteer organization; we rescue and re-home companion animals; we advocate for responsible, respectful and compassionate care of animals; we offer pet related information to the public; we ensure all animals in our care are spayed or neutered before adoption to reduce the over population of unwanted, homeless cats and dogs.
Unfortunately we can do nothing about angry neighbours with wandering cats in their yard. But the cat owner can.
