Changeless God, changing world

Pastor John Nicholson provides his views on the constancy of God in an ever-changing world

One statement I hear a lot from people is “everything is changing so fast.”

If you buy a computer at 9 a.m. there will probably be a better model out by 4 o’clock! Did you know that every day in Canada:

• 8,000 people move to a different house

• 1,200 move to another province

• 50 businesses go broke

• 750 people buy a new ca• 250 couples get divorced

More information has been produced in the last 30 years than in the last 5,000 Years.  60 per cent of all items in the supermarket did not exist 10 years ago and 35 per cent of college grads are starting jobs that did not exist when they were born.

Even travel has changed – more than 100 years ago George Washington travelled from Virginia to Washington, DC by horseback. It took him 10 days. Today astronauts travel 25,000 miles per hour in a space vehicle. At that speed you can go from Vancouver to Whitehorse in two minutes.

Someone observed, “my great grandfather rode a horse but was afraid of the train. My grandfather rode the train but was afraid of the car. My father rode in a car, but was afraid of the airplane. Now I ride in an airplane and am afraid of a horse!”

For so many of us, change is really unsettling and life has become so unpredictable. In Psalm 90, Moses coped with all his changes by praying to the God who never changes like this – “Lord, through all the generations you have been our home. Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

Comfort and strength is ours when we consider that our world today is in the hands of an infinite God who never loses track of what is happening. This same God reaches out to us in love through His Son Jesus Christ. As we come to know Him we soon discover that His love does not fail and He is a changeless God in a changing world.

John Nicholson is a pastor with Northstar Baptist Church in Quesnel.
