City needs a road plan

Dear Sir:

You should save your “Pave plan” editorial, The Terrace Standard, April 13, 2011, and run it again during the next municipal election.

Dear Sir:

You should save your “Pave plan” editorial, The Terrace Standard, April 13, 2011, and run it again during the next municipal election.

It would be therapeutic, in the aftermath of the federal election and the HST referendum, to experience an election in the spirit of “What shall we do for our community?” as an alternative to the typical but rather sad “What will government do for me so it does not cost me anything?” election palaver.

Roads and sidewalks are wear items just like rubber boots are.

Granted, pavement will last longer than rubber boots will, but roads are nonetheless wear items.

We know that saving for old age, for education, for a vacation, for a new roof or a new fridge is prudent, much smarter and cheaper over the long term than quick fixes paid by maxing out our credit cards.

Same goes for municipal roads; it is cheaper to regularly repave roads (and where needed replace the base) than it is to patch broken patches with more patches.

The City of Terrace needs to be encouraged to maintain its equipment reserve and, for the same reasons, to establish a road paving reserve.

Terrace, B.C.
