We’re coming up to another wonderfully busy period of time around here, arts and culturally speaking that is, which is great because it means that people who are looking for things to do will have quite a few options in the coming weeks — something that’s always nice during the fall months.
Up first is a pair of lectures at the Summerland Museum and Archives.
These lectures are short, 30-minute talks that are a part of the Museum and Archive 2016 lecture series.
The first lecture takes place on Saturday, Oct. 22 and is entitled, “’More Lightning in the Hand:’ A Case Study of the Security Vulnerabilities of the Osoyoos Point of Entry at the Canadian-US Boundary Line.” The talk is being given by museum curator Amy McCroy.
The following week, Saturday, Oct. 29, the topic of conversation is Baffin Island: Jewel of the High Arctic, given by John Topham.
Both lectures run for 30 minutes, as mentioned, and start 1:30 p.m. For more information contact the Summerland Museum and Archives.
If you’re in the mood for a little Halloween(ish) music, you’re in luck.
Zias Stonehouse has a jazz night coming up on Thursday, Oct. 27, starting at 7 p.m.
This is a great chance to sit back and enjoy some fantastic homegrown jazz.
I’ve had a few chances to listen to these performers over the summer and I can’t think of a better way of spending what will likely be a cold and rainy night than by listening to them perform — for some reason jazz and colder nights are an excellent pairing in my mind.
There is a cover charge and if you’re interested, you can get more information online at www.ziasstonehouse.com.
Last, but certainly not least, is the return of the Contenders to Summerland.
It’s always nice to see Summerland end up on a band’s tour schedule, it’s even nicer when it happens year after year.
That there’s enough support in Summerland to keep bringing the Contenders back, is downright impressive.
The duo consists of Canadian singer-songwriters Valdy and Gary Fjellgaard, who put on a great show from beginning to end that always get the toes tapping.
The show takes place on Nov. 1 at Centre Stage in Summerland.
