Dear editor,
Re: No Burns festivities? Shame (Record, Jan. 25).
Yes Finn, there will be a Robbie Burns supper.
Since I moved to the valley from Nanaimo three years ago, I too was surprised by the apparent lack of events celebrating the famous Scottish poet and song writer, Robbie Burns.
In Nanaimo there are several celebrations each January. It was not unusual for me to participate in three or four Burns events every year.
The Comox Valley Pipe Band Society (CVPBS) has been discussing the lack of festivities here in the valley, and we’ve decided to host a Burn’s supper fundraiser on Jan. 25, 2014. This will include a typical Burns menu of roast beef with gravy, taties and neeps, Haggis (of course) and desert; a cash bar and door prizes.
The Comox Valley Pipe Band will play a couple of short sets of traditional tunes and there will most likely be a display of highland dancing.
We want our guests to have a good time dancing to a live band or a DJ after supper.
The CVPBS is the umbrella organization that supports the Comox Valley Pipe Band. We are a self-funded group dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of Scottish culture in the Comox Valley.
The band regularly participates in a wide variety of community events and highland gatherings, as well as providing individual piping and drumming services for special occasions.
We are particularly proud of our young and old students who have been introduced to the arts of piping and pipe band drumming though our complimentary training program.
Stay tune for news and stop and say “Hello” when you see us on the street.
Paul Rankin
