My job as an MLA representing the people in the Cariboo-Chilcotin is a great one and I love what I do.
While the hours can be long and the work keeps pouring in, it is rewarding when I get the chance to connect with my constituents in person and hear about the positive impacts government programs or funding have made in their lives. Now, while many of my summer days are spent in meetings or in one of my MLA offices, there are times when I am invited to community events to celebrate the people, businesses and culture of a town in my riding. Recently I had the chance to attend the first annual Alexis Creek Daze. I was so encouraged to see how much local support there was. The whole community showed up. It was heart warming to see how everyone came together, as recently this area has struggled with unemployment, drought, fires, and floods. We had so much fun. There were booths set up selling arts and crafts, Rosalee Maurice had a booth showcasing her photography, and the Schellenbergs had a booth with their organic products. I also stopped by the booth filled with homemade baking and I have to thank Connie Haley for cooking the great hot dogs.
Activities included a horseback poker run, a mountain bike poker ride, and they even had chicken poop bingo! The highlight of the day was a showdown in a horseshoe tournament between Bob Bradshaw and Jordan Grier versus Al Madley and me. It was a close game, but Al and I were able to squeak out a victory.
Before the day was over, one last stop was made at the local gift store to check out the quilt display. What a find! There were some quilts on display that were more than 50 years old. It was a great ending to a relaxing and fun day. One of those days where I get the chance to escape the office and connect with the people I represent while I’m in Victoria. A day that puts a smile on my face on those long stretches trapped in the office. The Chilcotin is such a beautiful part of British Columbia and the people are so resilient.
I’m honoured to be a part of it all.
