Dear editor,
No doubt many Canadians are celebrating the Conservative Party’s decision to eliminate its policy statement on traditional marriage. The party, it is said, has caught up to the modern world. It has finally arrived in the 21st century.
But is that really a good thing? A Conservative Party—and political conservatism generally—is, by definition, not supposed to reflect every societal trend. Instead, Conservatives offer a traditional alternative to progressivism. Their principles are based in our heritage, not in modern ideals.
In that light, last Friday’s vote is not a step forward for the Conservative Party. If anything, the party has proved—if any proof were needed—that it no longer is Conservative.
That is not a cause for celebration. It is, rather, a great tragedy.
