To the Editor,
Re: Motion to review city’s core services fails in close council vote, Dec. 20.
The majority of Nanaimo council told taxpayers Monday it’s fun to spend their money.
Basically, Mayor John Ruttan and four councilors, Dianne Brennan, Ted Greves, Fred Pattje and Diana Johnstone, said they love whatever city staff tell them and are eager to be bobble-heads.
The five need to get educated and research why democracies and fairness work – everything must be questioned.
The foxes are running the hen house. Translation: city staff is telling council members only what they want them to hear so they get their way.
We have seen this many times with the Vancouver Island Conference Centre, the Port Theatre, Nanaimo Centre Stage and contracts. The misinformation and bias continues uninterrupted.
These unthinking council members need to pay out of their own pockets for whatever screw ups occur in the future.
Arguments from Brennan that spending $200,000 on a core review is not necessary is downright ignorant considering she is anxious to hand out $800,000 to face-lift a cumbering Victoria Road theatre.
Brennan obviously does not care about spending just a few hundred thousand dollars to watch the city budget $170-million, but is happy to shell out almost $1 million dollars for a building needing demolishment.
The majority of council is not doing its due diligence and not watching over our money as it should.
