Creston community complex should be open on holidays

Management has to figure out a way to avail this facility to our community with less restrictive hours, says letter writer Bryan Wuzinski…

To the Editor:

I would like to express my ongoing displeasure with the open hours of the Creston and District Community Complex. On Family Day, I went to work out at the CDCC at my usual time of 11 a.m. and discovered the complex closed.

In my former life, I used to work at a ski hill and golf course. Privately owed, I have to add. Year after year, the largest day on the ski hill was Family Day in February. Another large day was Christmas Day. The Creston rec center is closed on both those days save for swimming from 2-4 p.m. and Tim Hortons had a free swim from 4-6.

Now if the management’s excuse for not opening for, say, “holiday hours” from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., was that there was no budget for the extra staff hours, I think the additional business from visitors from out of province and from locals that are too busy to frequent the rec centre during normal hours would have more than made up for the additional payroll required to keep the centre open.

We have a great facility and I am very happy to pay the assessment on my property tax each year to cover the cost of the improvements to our community, but I think the management has to figure out a way to avail this facility to our community and guests with less restrictive hours. If the manager was from a private organization, there would never be a closed day on a holiday where the most possible customers were available.
