Cyclists a minority

Penticton's elected officials should have a real close look at spending more money on bike lanes

Thanks to Rowena Tansley, president of the Penticton and Area Cycling Association, for the stats on Bike to Work week. The article in the Western stated that they had over 100 people for the last three mornings.

Also stated in the June 1 Western was the population stats from the Statistics Canada 2011 census that showed Penticton’s population was 32,877. If that is the case, then less than half a per cent of the population took part in this event. So if that’s not a minority special-interest group, what is?

The elected people handling the purse strings of the citizens of Penticton should have a real close look at spending more money on bike lanes.

The majority of people could be better served in other ways. To put it into perspective, there are more people that go to garage sales than cycle.
